You know it’s officially winter in Jacksonville when the hoodie comes out. After months of heat, waking up to temperatures in the fifties feels like an entirely new season.

I’ve been making the most of it, and today I’m sharing my top five favorite ways to enjoy this cool weather and how you and your family can enjoy it too.

Top 5. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The cooler weather makes walking around so much easier. You can see the animals, grab food, and even find a full bar. They put up Christmas lights if you go later in the season. The Halloween theme might already be done, but it’s still a great experience. It’s a quick trip from almost anywhere in Jacksonville, and it works for an evening out or a relaxed weekend day.

Top 4. The Block Jax. A new entertainment venue off Gate Parkway. Food vendors operate out of old container bins, and there’s live music, a dog park, and a kids’ play area. I haven’t seen the exact opening date yet, but it’s slated for November. I’m guessing it’s either open now or opening very soon. I’ll post updates on my social media once I see it. I think this spot is going to be a hit for people on the south side of Jacksonville.

“From hikes to markets, Jacksonville's winter has something for everyone.”

Top 3. Nights of Lights in St. Augustine. It’s a beautiful walk, and grabbing dinner down there makes it even better. If you live near St. Augustine, you already know how great this time of year feels. It’s known as one of the biggest light displays in the United States when you look at how concentrated the Christmas lights are in one area. Throw on a Christmas sweater and take a walk around Saint George Street. It’s always worth it.

Top 2. Little Talbot Island State Park. For number two, I always recommend getting outdoors for a hike. Jacksonville and the surrounding areas have more state parks than people realize. One of my favorites is Little Talbot Island State Park, just north of town and about a 45-minute trip from the south side.

I love the Dune Ridge Trail. It has some sand, but it’s not too harsh. You get dunes, beaches, and stretches of trail that take you through the oaks. This cooler weather makes it the perfect time to be out there and get some exercise.

Top 1. Riverside Arts Market. And finally, my number one pick is the Riverside Arts Market, often called the under-the-bridge market. This time of year, the place fills with vendors offering local produce and handmade products. With Christmas coming up, it’s one of the easiest ways to knock out some gifts. They bring out a lot of vendors during this season, which makes it one of my favorite spots.

Bonus: golf. And of course, if you know me, you know I can’t leave out golf. This is one of the best times of year to play. The weather is beautiful. The time change means you need to start a little earlier, but it’s still perfect out there. If you golf, get out and enjoy it.

Jacksonville’s short winter is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the cooler days. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re exploring, relaxing, or hitting the golf course.
