Hurricane season can arrive with little warning, and when it does, there is usually no time for you to scramble for supplies. However, being ready ahead of time ensures you and your household can weather the storm safely. Over the years, I’ve learned there are a few key items that every home should have on hand before the first warning is issued. Here are the most important items you should prepare:

1. Water supply. Water is the first priority. If the plumbing system is disrupted or flooding affects water quality, access to clean drinking water may be limited. Keep bottled water stored in a cool place inside your home, not in the garage, where heat can affect it. Consider freezing some bottles so they can also serve as ice to help keep food cold if the power goes out.

“The safest homes in Jacksonville are the ones ready before the storm hits.”

2. Non-perishable food. Stock up on items that do not require refrigeration, such as canned goods, granola bars, and packaged snacks. Choose foods that are easy to prepare and have a long shelf life so you can maintain proper nutrition if power is lost for several days.

3. Flashlight and batteries. If the power goes out at night, visibility becomes a challenge. Keep a few flashlights or even a headlamp handy, along with a generous supply of batteries. Store different battery sizes so you are prepared for any device you may need to use. Adequate lighting is essential for moving around safely in the dark.

4. First aid and medications. A basic first aid kit is a must. Include items such as bandages, antibiotic ointment, and any necessary prescription medications. Since pharmacies may be closed during and after a storm, keep a small supply of your prescriptions on hand. Store these in one bag so they are easy to locate in an emergency.

5. Important documents and cash. Keep important documents and some cash in a safe, accessible location. Credit card processing may not be available during extended power outages. Having cash on hand can be useful if you need to buy supplies or trade with neighbors. Storing essential documents together will also make it easier to access them if you need to leave your home.

While we all hope to avoid the worst of hurricane season, preparation is key. By keeping these five essentials ready, you can protect your household and respond more effectively if a storm impacts the area.
